I don’t know a genealogist who isn’t an avid reader and collector of genealogy books. I always ask my friends and colleagues for recommendations. Whenever a virtual lecturer presents in front of a bookcase, I’m craning to try to make a list of what books he or she found valuable enough to purchase.
And don’t get me started on the bibliographies in presentation handouts and class syllabi. I love a good book! But, I’m also very frugal. So, I always try to get the book through the library or if it is an older book that is out of copyright, check if a free, digital copy is available.
Be sure to check WorldCat, Google Books, Hathi Trust, and Internet Archive before purchasing. And if you’d like to create a shortcut to search for books online, check out my YouTube video, Search Engine Shortcuts in Google Chrome for Genealogy. Once you preview a book or know it is a book you will use over and over again, find a spot on your bookshelf.
Zotero Library
If you are not familiar with Zotero, I highly recommend it to organize your physical, digital, and wish list library. It also builds citations and has many other useful features for genealogy, such as a research log. You can save books, journals, websites, maps, cases . . . everything!
Below is the library or genealogy books that I have compiled. You can search by category or tag. Please note that many of the tags are from my personal research library, and you won’t be able to view them. If you see a name or topic that is not available, feel free to contact me.
