This is one of the most intriguing photographs. It is so rare to see people smiling in historical photographs. I would love to find out who this happy family is.
Just kidding…this is my family in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 2020. Victorian Photography Studio has beautiful, period clothing and accessories (no plastic fans and whiskey bottles here!). And, they make a tintype, allowing you to watch the process. We took this picture on our phone.
Historically, though, you could not move or change your facial expression while having your picture taken. Otherwise, the image would blur. So, our ancestors weren’t grumpy…they just wanted the best image possible.
Even without smiling, some people were able to convey their personalities. Especially the first photo in album 1. Click on the links of unidentified albums to view these people. I would love to figure out who they are.
